I shake each child's hand and bend down to their level on the first day of school. I introduce myself as their teacher and welcome them to our classroom. I have found that parents and students like this. It can put some students more at ease with you, once you have formally met each child. This is better than the general introduction to the class. Then I would go into my morning schedule. Explain to the class what they are going to do during the day. Talk about school rules/expectations. Read a story that talks about the first day of school "Miss Kindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten" by Joseph Slate and "David Goes to School" by David Shannon. Both of these books are great to set up the ground work for your year. Have the students participate in calendar. Make sure that you are well planned. Kindergartners can smell blood...and will go for it! It is a fun and rewarding grade level. Do not underestimate them because they are testing you too. Try to be fair and consistent...they are watching all of your decisions and will call foul, if they feel that they are unjustly accused/disciplined. Good luck!
