there's the core or seed of truth in every major religion or wisdom system - and then there are the constructs and subjective norms that imperfect minds and imperfect societies make of them. these may or may not have much of anything to do with the core truth, or the initial experiential knowing that the founders and initial practitioners of any given path were trying to share.
imho -

but it is also true that pretty much every major religion does say something about not being overly focused on things like wealth, sex, worldly pleasures - maybe just to encourage people to release attachment to those and enable them to look beyond worldly desires to something greater ? that's different than being against those things, though.

I am a Christian, and I have to admit that some religious people can get so legalistic that if anything is 'fun' it is sinful. I do believe God is a God of celebration and happiness and joy. He did create sex to be something enjoyed. But all of this is to be done in reverence of the laws He has made. He established them for our good and not to harm us. Look what sex outside of marriage has done in our country....porn, abortion, broken homes, single parents, STD's, not to mention, people whose hearts look like swiss cheese. I know I can have a drink at a party, but I also know that drinking too much can ruin my life or those that I love.
Paul said that all things are lawful, but not all things are good for us. God is love, and that love means protecting us from harm. So celebrate! Just don't bring harm to yourself or anyone else and honor God above all!

Maybe they are, and assume it follows that God is. Even though I'm not a Christian, I think I could dig joining a black church, with all the joy they bring to the ceremony.

If there is a God/god, I like to think we are meant to enjoy life--within reason, I suppose. I mean, even the ancient Greeks warned against hubris (going too far) but had their share of fun.

What makes you think He is? Have you ever seen and anteater or a blowfish or listened to water falls or leaves falling in wind or seen rabbits making bunnies or ect: Father is not against anything but our sinning.

christians dont oppose celebrations, it is you definition of celebration and all that it entails that is preached against.
not comedy, but coarse jesting.
not sex, but promiscuity and fornication and licenstiousness.

If you think we are against celebrating, you obviously have no clue what we believe.
