A full wave bridge rectifier, center tap transformer, and filter cap consist of four diodes in series; anode to cathode, tied to the secondary side of a transformer; alternating current on the primary side of a transformer is either stepped up or down (depending on the transformer) and the bridge rectifier on the secondary side produces direct current. The capacitor on the secondary side filters any spikes or noise. For a detailed explanation and schematic see: http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_6/chpt_5/6.html
