Interesting question. I'll be interested in what people who believe in God say.
Buddhism is mainly about training the mind, and I find your question interesting because you could say about half the training is effort and half is letting go (more or less, depending on the mind).

Moses had great effort, Samson had a great let-go.
A sweatlodge ceramony is a great deal of work and effort to prepare, and can take a great physical effort to get through for some people. And once inside, some feel the comfort of the womb, and let go of their outside trappings to relate to the Creator.
Some people exert great effort to hold onto pain because they understand what it offers them, and must apply that much more effort to let the pain go.
I think that the answer is as individual as the person. And the path requires something different of each of us.
Great help, aren't I? But I am serious. Best of luck making up your mind.

It could be both. It can actually be an effort to learn to silence the mind and just let go of all thought.
I guess it depends on what form of God you are looking for. Are you seeking God within yourself by being silent, or outside of yourself by experiencing God through interaction with others.
God can be found in many ways....but it takes effort to learn the discipline of letting go. (at least for some of us).

Letting-go is a great effort, at least in my experience. So in that sense, it's really both.

I'm quite impressed by this question.
I've suffered a great deal of loss in my life, or at least to me I've lost too many loved ones. I have wanted with all my heart to believe in an afterlife for them. In the wrenching agony of their loss, I have yearned for the possibility of so much as one last word or touch or kiss. No matter how badly I wanted to believe in God and an afterlife in my grief and misery I have never thought of it as real.
Wanting desperately to believe in God does not work - so how DO people convince themselves that God is real?

It's a little of both. The effort is in opening ones mind and heart to him, alot of people can't do that for some reason or another. The let go comes in letting go of the material world and the things about it we have become accustomed to and depend on.

Just let go and let God! He will do the rest as there is no effort involved.

You ask a gently powerful question. Sometimes the greatest effort is to let go. Letting go of power, privilege, wealth, are all areas requiring great effort to let go.
When I first let go, it was from the bottom and required every ounce of social behavior I had to keep from pounding the smang next door into the ground. effort & let go. A dynamic duo.

If a person is a thinker it will be a great effort to let their free thinking go.
