Nowdays the Ten Commandments are mainly only used when obscure and little known judges want to cause a stir before they retire, and decide to hang them on the walls of the public courthouse before immediately emailing the media about a "hot story".

To manipulate. To make you fear an alleged god. To make you feel guilt for doing things you're going to do anyway. To make you feel (even though they are going to deny it) that killing someone and having sex with someone who is not your spouse is about the same things (after all they're all 'sins')...
