****1-800-ASK-USPS***
First class mail (including flat mail like manila envelopes) can be automated & should only take 2 or 3 days to arrive. However, it's not a guaranteed service, and it cannot be "traced." Parcels, boxes, and book-rate materials are handled differently and would take 7 to 10 days.
The only money-back guaranteed service they offer is Express Mail, which is overnight to most locations and can be tracked and traced online or by phone. There are other options depending on what you need. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS, they can give you all the info.

Yes, the boss is right and if you want it early try USPS next day or priority mail in which it will take about 2-3 days but, you have to pay more fee.

It depends on when you mail it off, the physical address, and what it is. For a standard piece of mail that you send off on a Monday should be delivered on a Wednesday, Thursday at the latest (physical address being a home).

Why don't you check your local post office. You can send things and pay a fee, for instance $14.99 up and it will be delivered the next day.
