That depends on the particular opinion of the Imam of the shrine that the Muslim belings to. While gambling is strictly forbidden, games are another matter. It is subject to interpretation...one of the best players I played against was a Muslim...I have also known Muslims that would not play Chess, checkers and many other games due to religious restrictions. There is no real set answer....

There is a difference of opinion, anyone who cites the hadith is using a source that is not our holy book(they'll usually cite a weak hadith and claim it is true), some scholars say that anything you would do to have fun is forbidden which is just crazy(some say watching cartoons is forbidden, shaving your beard is a mjor sin, getmy point). Personally and probably to the benefit of most muslims, it is better not to listen to what the Saudi Arabian scholars have to say. Chess is just a game, noone said you'd get addicted to it, and it does portray on a basic level certain strategems of war. Anyone who legislates in Islam the forbidden things when he is not sure is putting himself in a very very precarious spot in the eyes of God.

The playing of chess is Haraam (forbidden). If the playing of chess is accompanied by gambling than its prohibition is unanimous. If it is played without gambling then there is a difference of opinion in its prohibition.
This is just one flaw in sharia law: the Islamists cannot agree among themselves what should be legal and what should not.

Muslims have directives not to involve in such activities those has no usage for man kind and spending time in such activities does not serve humanities.
Now it your decision how you want to spend time that will be beneficial for yourself as well as for others as well.
That does not mean Muslim can not play or recreate them selves but any game or recreation activity that is just wast of time and not healthy for brain or physical health, is not advised to be involved in.
