So the sight of a neked beer bottle does not offend the general public, and is supposed to hide it from the cop in the lane next to you.
I do not know if this is urban legend or fact, but supposedly, a cop will pretend he does not see the brown paper bag, as long as the drinker is driving safely, but if he sees the actual bottle, he will bust you. This came from a kinder, gentler time, long ago in the time called the '70s. There is a TV show by that name, too. I'm sure that today, with all of the mothers against drunk drivers, and all the involutary manslaughter, drunk driving charges, this is no longer true, if it ever was. My then boyfriend told me that. He is long gone, trust me. So are the '70s, and my youth, LOL.

Some states have a law that stores have to put any alcohol in a bag at purchase, I had a clerk tell me anything with an exposed top had to go in a bag, such as 6 packs or single bottles or cans. I was living in MA at the time.

It is illegal to drink in public -but some do it. Keeping the bottle hidden is a gesture of concealment. Yes, the cops know what you've got in the bag, and they can bust you on it. But it's an old agreement of sorts that in many places the drunks can get on with their job, while the cops get on with theirs.

You can't walk out of the store with the bottle showing in most states.and, the brown bag absorbs the "sweat" from the bottle so drunks can grip it better. Ha.

The answer that someone gave, "insulation", makes sense.

I always kind of thought it was so people carrying beer wouldn't be embarrassed to have a load of something tacky like beer. (The proverbial "plain brown wrapper"..) :)
