My girlfriends son used to take off his diaper & "play" w/ himself or pee on the floor. She finally went out & purchased size 2 toddler briefs (the samllest size 2 you can find) and pu them on, he could not pull them down to undo his diaper, it worked for her, may work for you

my 21/2 yr old still does this to his diaper too! (just to be clear on this with some people who would wonder why my 2 1/2 yr old isn't potty trained or even close to it...he has down syndrome and they usually don't understand the whole potty thing until they are between 4-5 yrs) any way...back to the question...
I have found that pull-ups are a waste of money they don't help in this situation (he just pulls them down) the only sure fire way is to use tape!...not scotch tape it isn't strong enough, go for either duct tape or the clear box tape (those are the strongest) start out by just taping the front by the tabs, and if he still is pulling them off you will have to go with the tape all the way around the diaper. I know this may sound totally weird but it is the only thing that I have found that actually works, and the diaper stays on.

Most children are curious, and do not like to feel the "restraint" of something covering them. I feel that your child may be going through the "I want to see how this works" phase that many children go through.
And although some have suggested that this may be an indication that your child is ready to potty train, that may not be the actual reason they do this. One child I used to deal with, had a habit of poking holes in the plastic diapers and smearing the wet gel all over the place. You take steps to prevent things like this from happening.
As for taking off the diaper, you might consider putting extra tape over the tapes of the diaper (or over the velcro tabs)-- tape that they can not take off.
But do not make it too much of an issue, because this behavior is quite common in young children, especially as they go through the "I want to see how things work" phase.. But the main thing is to communicate with your child- even if you do not always understand what the child is saying to you, your child understands you-- so explain that it needs to stay on, because you do not want "your pee to get on anything else, because pee needs to stay in the diaper or in the potty". This will help your child to realize that this behavior is not appropriate.
But in the end, unless it is making a mess, then it is no big deal and putting briefs over the diaper, or tape on the tabs, etc. is an easy, no fuss cure to the problem :-)
Good luck to you.

Make sure he can't get to the diaper tapes. My son wears little jeans with zipper and snap. They are snug and not so easy to pull down to get at the diaper tape. However if he's pulling his diaper off because it's uncomfortable and doesn't like the feel of his wet or soiled diaper it might be time to introduce the potty. No pressure at this age, just get him used to seeing the potty in the bathroom. Let him sit on it even if it's fully clothed. Slow and gradual is the key. Let him set the pace.

My son did this around the same age. I put his diapers on backwards which helped a little. I would also take a long piece of duct or shipping tape and place over the velcro fasteners on the diaper. Just be careful not to get the tape on the baby's skin as it will irritate it.
When I did this he wasn't able to get his diaper off any more. :o)
Good luck!

if potty training is not an option, pull ups probably wont help because they are easier to get off than diaper. Try buying him suspenders or something to keep his pants on so he can't get to his diaper. The suggestion about putting underwear on top might work as well. basically you have to just make it so he can't take it off whatever it takes. good luck

It may be a sign of readiness for toilet training. I have an ebook that I would be happy to forward to you that tells the signs of readiness and how to effectively train in 3 days or less. Did the trick in 2 days for my 19 month old, and my friends son too. Email me at starsalso@yahoo.com to request a copy.

this may sound crazy, but put the diaper on backwards. Then he can't reach the tape. I tried this with my daughter recently and it worked. I didn't have to do it but a few days and when i put them back on right, she left them alone.

He could be telling you he is ready to be potty trained - give it a go and see how things go. My son did the same but I soon discovered that it was the nappy chafing him so check those things first and then try the potty route
