I would be very "excited" and yes, I would "do something". He probably thought you didn't want him to do anything, especially if the two of you have never had sex.
Sometime after you fell asleep, he may have went to the bathroom to "take care" of his excitement

So what you expected him to have sex with you while you were sleeping? Been there, done that, . . . and this was in a marriage mind you . . . and it backfired more than you could ever imagine (and more than I ever imagined that's for damn sure).
A guy in his right mind would, in now way, shape, or form do 'anything' about it. Plus perhaps this dude was thinking it was some 'test' that he had to pass. Perhaps he thought that you were trying to find out if he wanted you just for sex. Women are freaky creatures and you never ever know what the hell is going on in their head. The dude played it safe. Good for him. Especially since it was only a girlfriend.
As for being hot, what the heck would he want to torture himself if there was nothing he could do about it? Just roll over and go to sleep until the morning when perhaps something can be done about it.
Sounds like he has had a lot more sex than you have . . . most people that have had sex a lot would just go to sleep and get some later.
Sorry to burst your ego on this one . . . I am sure you two had fun later and in a more appropriate setting.
