I have a graduate degree in electrical engineering with a specialty in electromagnetics. Yet none of my textbooks can give a decent mathematical description of baluns, ununs, feedline chokes, or similar devices. I have seen plenty of "hand-waving" explanations that give a general idea about these things, but I have yet to see anyone "do the math." Does anyone know of a good website or a good textbook that mathematically models these devices? It is almost as if the balun is a magical "black art" that no one can fully characterize.

Thanks!

Hi. I agree. Baluns and there cousins seem to be a black art. Try a search for amateur radio sites. These guys know more that you might think. One example : http://www.qsl.net/iz7ath/web/02_brew/11_balun/pag01_eng.htm
