I'm confused by your question. I was unaware that some people thought this was even possible. Such a person would be extremely arrogant. What exactly is it that people truly "own" other than their thoughts and actions? In this life, if these are not pure thoughts or actions in the service of God, their souls will be "owned" by the Devil.
In my mind, more importantly to belong to God, or be "owned" by God, not the other way around.

How do you "own" God? Do you mean "why is it so important to know the one true God? As Christians claim?
If this is the case, Christians claim to know the one true God and state the only way to heaven is through faith in Jesus Christ. They believe this because the Bible states this. You may dismiss it as exclusive, but in reality, virtually all the world religious beliefs are mutually exclusive of each other.
For example, do you get to heaven by blowing yourself up along with as many Jews (or Christians) as possible? Or do you get to heaven by faith in Christ? Are we reincarnated over and over until we reach eternal bliss? Or is it appointed to man to die once and then face judgment. It's either one or the other. It can't be both.
A reasoned person will look at the claims of each religion, the source documents they are based on, the evidence of these claims, and so forth. The Lord would love and invite your honest search for Him.
After all, He's already paid the price in full so that you can be reconcilled to Him.

Interesting question.
I suspect that you're implying that religions, Christianity for example, attempt to own God. However, speaking as a Christian, what's important to us is that God own us!
I would argue that it is the atheists and the "New Agers" who truly seek to "own" God by asserting that they ARE gods.
I wish you luck on your search. God promises "seek and ye shall find". If you search after Him sincerely and dilligently, you will find Him because nobody searches for Him unless He calls them first.
Pick up a Bible (New King James translation is good) and get into the New Testament, especially the gospels. It's more valuable than gold. It's wisdom.

I guess some people do want to "own" god ... so they make god in their image ...
I much prefer to be OWNED by God ... He made me; He redeemed Me. He has a glorious eternity planned for us.

I don't know why unbelievers want to own themselves especially when they tried to own other people's God too. Pure Confusion on their part.

Know one owns God, but he owns us because he bought us when he shed his blood and sacrificed his life for us.
