At a young age, children don't have the capacity to concentrate to watch an entire program. Commercials are generally louder, with lively music and flashy pictures that catch their attention. They are also in short 30 - 45 second snippets that their young minds can focus on. After that they are ready to explore something new. If there is something in particular that he is seeing that you don't want him to see, I would suggest tuning in to something like Noggin or Nick Jr. or putting in an age appropriate video or DVD while he is in the room. My son used to stop whatever he was doing for the Charmin Bears commercials (and yes, yelled if the channel was turned while he was watching them). That came in handy when I needed him to be still for a diaper change or to wipe him off. As he got older and more aware of what he was watching, I didn't want him seeing some of the adult oriented ads or commercials for the violent prime time dramas. I allowed only Noggin and Nick Jr on the satellite or a video of programs I approved off. Noggin is good because it is a commercial-free, learning oriented channel from 5 AM to 5 PM (central time) everyday.

As you've no doubt noticed, on cartoon channels the commercials are geared toward kids, usually advertising toys, snacks, etc. At 16 months, your son is probably a little too young to be able to follow a cartoon for long, however the commercials are short enough to catch his attention.

Yes, all four of my children were the same way. My twins are 16 months old now and love advertisements.
The advertisemens often contain music and that is what attracts children. Most children enjoy music.
You might want to try getting the Baby Songs DVDs or something similiar. My kids loved them. They play a lot of music and show other babies in various settings.
Congrats on your first child!

I certainly agree that community programmers could desire to be the two entire morons or genuine sickos while they air an advert for some thing like the hills have eyes throughout a new child's comic strip teach. while i replaced into youthful (4-6 -ish), I continuously complained approximately those commercials that have been on on a similar time as I watched transformers or some thing. i'm able to't fathom why they might think of even for a 2d that it is acceptable. On a distinctive word, in the journey that your babies are 13 and 15 (and BOYS, no much less), then i might incredibly a lot quit hectic approximately horror action picture commercials altogether. I undergo in concepts while i replaced into 12, incredibly a lot everybody in my classification had considered the action picture Silence of the Lambs. while Starship squaddies first got here out, my youthful cousin replaced into then 8 or 9 years previous i think of, and his kinfolk by twist of fate went to be sure it no longer understanding in basic terms how bloody it replaced into (the commercials right here in Peru weren't exhibit adequate and made it appear like yet another celeb Wars-y technology fiction action picture.... moronic advertisers. yet it is yet another situation). They have been shocked and traumatic that he replaced into being uncovered to this. They asked him if he had to go away, yet he replaced into superb and pronounced he did no longer concepts seeing something of it. as a remember of actuality, all babies get to a undeniable factor the place they understand the version between video clips and genuine existence, and a horror action picture advert right here and there won't injury them, extraordinarily at 13 and 15. If the 13-yo is your youngest, then i might say you haven't any longer something to rigidity approximately by capacity of now. i might guess funds that a minimum of your 15-yo has considered worse stuff than a pair of observed commercials. i know I had by capacity of that factor (and various others I knew of). Now, in the journey that your babies are especially comfortable to one in each and every of those fabric, attempt conversing to them each and every now and then to make effective they are ok. you will possibly be shocked at how little it impacts them by capacity of now. sturdy good fortune!

he watches them because he doesn't have a complete attention span at this age. commercials are usually less than 90 seconds and they are designed to catch peoples attention to begin with. so that 90 or so seconds is enough for him. all my boys did this and now my 2 1/2 yr old has made his way past commercials to music videos and 15 minutes of sesame street....and heaven forbid if you change the channel!...LOLOL

This is very curious! Perhaps it is a hidden subliminal message in the commercials that the infant perceives and we adults are oblivious to but maybe are being influenced by unconsciously without our knowing?

1. They require only a short attention span
2. They are louder than regular shows and thus draw attetion at their beginning
3. They are colorful and fast moving
4. They may be advertising items of interest i.e. toys or cereal
That's my 2 cents....
