I recently asked the Muslims in this section what was meant when questions were answered as Jesus (pbuh). I found out that pbuh means "peace be unto him" which is actually quite respectable.
For those of us who are unfamiliar with the Muslim faith, we don't understand that abbreviation. Would you instead be willing to use
Jesus (peace be unto him), instead of the (pbuh). It would help us to understand that your religion is not just the violent extremists that so many Americans erroneously believe.
Why not spell out the pbuh?

But don't you see, people don't always understand the abbreviations and for someone unfamiliar, we don't understand that it's a term of respect you are giving.

It's just shorter to type. I don't mind spelling out Be right Back or something smaller of the sort but when in a conversation containing various and repeated Prophet-names, it would be pointless to spell out Peace Be Upon Him continuously; very time-consuming.
When I am in a conversation with a good friend about religion, and a Prophet's name happens to come up and I follow with PBUH in parenthases, they simply ask what it means.
So if anyone assumed we were insulting Jesus (pbuh) or any other Prophet, they should double-check before rampaging about how "insensitive & violent" Muslims are =)
However, I shall try to spell out the abbriviations when the chance presents itself since you asked. Thank you for having the guts to at least ask Muslims what they meant before assuming the worst =)

I think as Yahoo connects millions of people together, and people from different places participate here, they already came to know, just like you, that "pbuh" stands for "peace be upon/unto him".
Internet also helps about this a great deal. Whenever a non-Muslim sees pbuh, s/he can just google the word, and get the meaning.
By the way, spelling it out would take more time, much more time when a Muslim uses a prophet's name several times. It's just like an abbreviation, easier to use, also satisfies its requirement of use.

Good question. Usually most Muslims says this when they hear the name of any prophet, be it be Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus or any other prophet know to them(peace be upon them). So this practice was taken into writing also, so that reader may also pray for peace when ever they read their names. As you know it would be very difficult to write "peace be upon him", when you are writing a long paragraph with lot of prophets name it, so people started to shorten it, because most people who reads it also understand what it means. Those who don't understand it will anyway find it by asking others or through Yahoo answers

Because typing that out after every single prophet is a pain in the neck and the abbreviation allows more time to type.

i always try to put english translations to Arabic words i use, but i never considered that the abbreviation would put some people off so inshaallah (God-willing) i will begin spelling out Peace Be On Him....

God willing I will start saying Jesus, peace be upon him, if it makes it easier for non-Muslims understand that we have a tremendous love and respect for Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Thank you for the insight!
