In our town the person is locked up for a night or until bail is paid then has to go to court. And pay a fine.

In Canada, you get to spend some time in jail until you are sober and then they let you go with a ticket (with a fine). This is a provincial offence (like a traffic ticket) not a federal criminal one.

I'm sure it depends on the circumstances..
You know.. being obnoxious.
Fighting, causing problems,ect.
or just passed out on the sidewalk.. pissin there pants. It makes a difference.

first you get scourged at the pillar of shame (friends laugh at you) then you have to do community service, followed by the freedom to drink again!!
