i have recently moved house, in the same town and my dog continues to escape and run back top my previous home. He is currently staying at my parents, in what i thougth was a secure backyard, while i get the new house ready but he manages to find a way out. It appears that he is looking for me as when i am home he needs no fence and will not go anywhere. any suggestions, i would hate for him to be hit by a car or stolen.

Your dog misses you. Sounds silly, but that is precisely why he is busting out to get to you. He only knows you at your old home, that's why he goes there to look for you. We have recently went through the same issue with our chocolate lab who is 3yrs old. This is what we did and it worked out well:

Spend time with him every day... designate time for your dog and interact with him every day while he is not staying in your home. We walked my lab daily and I went to feed him every morning. That stopped the great escapes. He is anxious and in an unfamiliar environment. His escape attempts will likely cease once you settle him into your new home.

Meantime, to ensure your dog's safe recovery if he does get out, be sure his shots are current and he wears a collar with an ID tag a all times. I would highly recommend microchipping your pet. It is a painless procedure for your dog and it will increase the chances of his safe return if he is ever picked up by animal control or taken to a shelter.

DO NOT LET HIM OUT WITHOUT A LEASH OR LONG LINE

Go to the hardware store. Get 3 lengths of ¼ inch to 3/8 inch soft nylon line – 20 foot, 50 foot and 100 foot. Get 3 snaps. Tie the snaps on one end and make a loop handle on the other.

These are long lines.

Go buy an instant-install electric fence.

You can pick them up on Ebay for 1/4 -1/2 the store price.

Until you have settled into your new home, your baby MUST be kept on a leash or he will get hurt or killed. Dogs are smart and can remember where HOME is for a long time after you have moved. So until he understands this is his new home a leash is a must.

if he is digging holes under the fence to get out all you need to do is sprinkle cayenne pepper at the base of the fence and then if she happens to smell this or lick it she will be detered from digging.
If your dog is jumping the fence then he/she needs to be tied up (but please make sure that the chain is not long enough that the dog can jump the fence and ultimately hang him/herself)

If nothing else put up a tempory dog run. But don't blame the dog, he is just trying to do what he thinks he is suppose to do

When he goes outside, he should be kept on a leash. he shouldn't be left unattended outside, or he will continue to escape. Its that simple.
