The Nun,
You know what? I'll bet that we only here about the bad ones. If I remember right, the Roman Catholics had an establishment in Ireland. And some of the women would get pregnant there. I believe that it was a school and they were orphans. The women would be shut up so no one could know that they were raped. And then the children were taken away. They started to talk about it later. And there is a documentary that I think I saw on IFC. It was a while ago. Truly sad.

Well, humans are considered to be "totally depraved", and anyone who deals with children on a constant basis will only become more convinced of the notion. I recall stories about boys being beaten simply for the "sin" of being born boys. Of left hands flattned by repeated punishments for writing with them. Of a disctinctly ,mideaval attitude towards humanity in general and an unwillingness to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.

Except their own priesthood, of course. The priesthood could get away with nearly anything for awhile there.

I think they were losing the battle in a Patriarchal church & given the kind of work they had to do...I'd say it had to be vented somewhere. I guess we shouldn't judge women who chose to serve thier God in such a way, knowing that they were in an oppressive situation that thier church allowed.
I've heard folks refer to Nuns years ago as the "Hover Nuns" because they had such attitude & were so strict. Any that I've met over the years were very kind to me & you have to love the dedication these women have...& I'm not a religious person.

it was before the Vativan II Council where nuns and people inside the convents were not allowed to do anything except discipline.... worst..... they look at the body as separated from soul.....nowadays.... nun are less conservative and at least they are following the rules of the Vatican II Council ("Opening the windows for fresh air!") Probably most of them are now reading the signs of the times..... they are now afraid of the cases filed against them because they are violating human rights.....and bravo to UNICEF for defining the Rights of Every Child.. at least now a simple child can defend him/herself against those tortures.... God bless!!!

My boyfriend went to catholic school and has told me horror stories about the nuns and the way they treated the students. Maybe it has something to do with being celibate.

Just in case you younger ones have forgotten the word,, is called discipline.. was well distributed in schools where they taught. And the students seemed to learn...they could read at grade level when they left school. Could do most simple math problems in their heads rather than requiring a calculator.

My father has told me horror stories galore, I think it is typiacl sociopathism--is that a word?--they have been trained to believe that they are better than 'normal' people and seperate, so they act accordingly and in the ultimate image of tough love

I dont thnk it was cruelty, it was called discipline. Wow, getting smacked in the hand with a ruler...might as well arrest them for trying to tech respect to the young punks lol.
Now you cant even spank YOUR OWN kid.....and look at the lack of respect and disreguard young people have for one another today.

because they were allowed to beat kids with rulers. And the kids learned pretty darned quickly that they did as they were told or beaten.
