Frankly, because American manufacturers took the American consumer for granted.
They made lower quality products that didn't last as long, didn't have all the safety features of the Japanese models and expected nationalism alone to save them. Now they've lost consumers' confidence and they're paying the price.

It depends on what part of the country you are from since there seem to be some real geographic dependencies. Up in the Pacific Northwest, there seem to be a mix of American consumers seeking a (relatively) fuel efficient all-wheel drive car (e.g. Subaru) or just seeking a status symbol (aka Lexus, Infiniti).

In the West, I think the focus is primarily on fuel efficiency (due to all the blessed traffic in LA and SF) and of course on status (Unless you are driving a Hummer or an Escalade but those aren't exactly fuel efficient)

If you head to the midwest and the south, I think you will find in the more meat and potatoes, mom and apple pie land, that there is a higher instance of American Made cars. I think that General Motors and Ford really count on the rural population to prop them up in the truck department.

The Japanese also really seem to be able to key in on their market demographics. When Toyota realized that they were struggling to reach the younger generation they came out with the Scion.

After World War II (in 1950), when America was in the process of rebuilding Japan, a man named William Deming (who American companies rejected) went to Japan and taught them all about Quality Management in Production of Goods. The Japanese embraced his ideas back then and the Americans have been playing catch up ever since.

Good night.

You can look at a lot of different factors.
1.) Resell value, just from my own wide range of experience, Japanese imports retain their value better than domestics.
2.) Reliability, if both are well-maintained, japanese imports have less of a tendency to experience problems.
3.) Japanese imports tend to be more ergonomically efficient and driver and passenger friendly. More comforts and whatnot.
4.) Gas mileage, available options (including more models with the hybrid option), the list can go on and on.
5.) Replacement parts for either domestic models or japanese imports are in pretty much the same price range.

*Also, please note comparisons can only be made between two similar cars in similar price ranges. You can't compare a Corvette z06 to a Corolla, it's just ridiculous.

For the same reason people buy just about anything:

1.- Quality
2.- Price
3.- Warranty

On the same token, foreign automakers can't build pick up trucks like American makers. Go to any Rodeo in American and you will not see a Japanese pick up truck hauling horses or trailers. You will see only American trucks.

i own a repair shop and i think one reason right now is gas mileage ,we are finally getting our cars up to where they get a little gas mileage now,but it has taken a long time to do it,and some of the American people needs to save money now not later, and now the American auto makers are realizing this and doing something about it,but were still way behind, and we have to catch up,or were going to loose the car market all together, and they know this, but until they can build car that gets what my Nissan does in town i,ll drive it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

it seems to me most Americans don't have a knowledge of mechanics and i agree that most American cars do lack in dependability and quality....we as Americans tend to lean towards price(whats cheaper to own or how much it costs)....but myself a true American i buy only American made cars or trucks.....i hate seeing all those factory workers looking for new jobs
