Do you mean a light bulb? Wires glow when enough current passes through it and heats it up to emit light. Unfortunately, most metals melt close to this point. Tungsten has too high a melting point but it can react with oxygen in air and burn up into a yellowish powder. A light bulb encases the tungsten filament in an inert gas such as argon so the filament can glow white hot and neither melt nor burn up.

Most light bulbs cost about $0.25-$1.00 (flashlight bulbs to household bulbs).
