They WERE as children, according to the Bible. They knew nothing of right, wrong, sin, transgretion. How could God expect them to obey commands when they had no sense of "disobedience", of "morality". They were created WITHOUT knowledge... that was the whole POINT of keeping them away from the tree, to keep them IGNORANT.
Even our courts don't blame people for doing things when they are incapable of understanding the significance of their actions and appreciating the consequences. Why would God punish Adam and the rest of his descendents forevermore for something Adam couldn't've comprehended as "bad"??

Your analogy is a great one. A child is told to not touch a gun. Is told the dangers of touching a gun. Is told that handling the gun could result in death. So why do you read tragic stories of children picking up the gun and accidentally killing themselves. Because the temptation is too great not to.
It's tragic that too many people are deceived by what is not the truth. As with Adam and Eve, it results in death!

Why would God place a tree in the garden and then forbid Adam to eat from it? God wanted Adam to obey, but God gave Adam the freedom to choose. Without choice, Adam would have been like a prisoner, and his obedience would have been hollow. The two trees provided an exercise in choice, with rewards for choosing to obey and sad consequences for choosing to disobey.

There is no way any of us can understand GOD in his wisdom.I can guess.To see if His children could pass the temptation.Now don't come back with but I thought GOD knew everything.Some Christians may tell you that they have the answers, not this one.I do what I know to be GOD's wishes and I will catch the details on the flip side.
