my sister who is 50 also drinks beer on a daily basis
should she also be having protected sex and if she is not

hcv is a blood to blood only disease. sexual intercourse transmission can only happen if blood to blood transmission occurs. hcv is not thought of as a "true std" because of this.
( i have had several men in my life ....none have hcv.) best friend doesn't have hcv and husband does....many couples are like that.
as for the alcohol? NOT A GOOD IDEA. alcohol gives the HCV a free ride....causes more damage on a much faster level than those hcv'ers that don't drink....(example: i had hcv for 27 years, hardly drank, took any otc meds and never abused drugs of anykind and i was only a stage and grade 2.2)
having low blood platelets doesn't sound good. your sisters liver is probably in stage 3 or more. (probably closer to end stage) but it's hard to say since we are talking via internet and I dont know your sisters last lab report...
i wish i could tell you something positive. it is a shame to see someone depressed from the hcv that has led to using a toxic substance (alcohol) that will certainly shorten her life.
anotherwards....HCV = depression, depression=self medicating=self medicating+HCV=death.

absolutely no drinking when you have hep c it is a liver disease and the alcohol just speeds up th effects like scarring and cirrochis.absolutely have protected sex.you may not hep c symptoms for 10 or more years.they do have medicine to treat this .tell her to see her doctor for the new treatments.hope this will help.
