A citation is a summons to appear. It states the time, date & location of the offense, as well as the code book # of the law that was broken. It tells you when & where to appear & you sign it to say that you understand it & that you promise to appear (or call) & pay the fines that could be due if you are found to be guilty or if you admit guilt. It has an individual number imprinted on it that identifies it as part of an Officers ticketbook so that it cannot be confused with any other Officer or Precinct. It also states the Officers name & Badge #, along with your name & other ID info.

a piece of paper saying that you violated a law and that you will appear in court on the day and time on the ticket, but it is not an admission of guilt. It is only a promise to appear

You have received a ticket. You either pay the fine or go to traffic court and state your side. If you loose, you pay court costs on top the fine for your traffic violation.
