How long has it been since she has had a bowel movement? She could get impacted so bad that she will not be able to go poop. My oldest son had problems with it when he was younger. He would hold it and hold it. He finally got so impacted that he was always having accidents. I took him to the doctor for a check up and asked him about it. He had a hard spot around his stomach from where his bowels were compacted so bad that all the poop that was coming out was just runny and like diarrhea. The reason he was having the accidents was because he couldn't even tell when he needed to go to the bathroom and it would just run out. We had to go through testing, enema's for a while at home and meds to get everything worked out. So I would suggest not letting it go for too long. I just thought he had slipped into having accidents because he was still young. It wouldn't hurt to have her checked out by her doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry. He's 12 now and he hasn't had anymore problems from it in a long time. Hope this helps!

I had great fun and games with my daughter when she was about 4, she would literally sit on the toilet for the best part of an hour in tears absolutely busting to go but refusing to, took her to the GP and found out she had an anal fissure (tear) in her bottom, so that was why she wouldn't go because of the pain, which in turn caused her to be constipated, he gave us some medicine to soften her poo so it could heal up as everytime she did let a bit out it was hard and felt sharp and prevented any healing, this could be the problem here, see your doc sooner rather than later and get it checked out, i can remember how frustrated i felt at not being able to help her. Also, remember that after things have sorted themselves out she may retain a fear of pooping and the cycle could start again. Good luck!

My 2 yr old has just had this problem but she was really trying to go so quickly noticed she was constipated. I bought Lactulose syrup from the chemist, it's basically just sugar water which breaks down the poo & helps it pass. On day 2 of giving it to her she went about 5 times & didn't strain once! The syrup is handy to keep in your medicine cabinet as you'll probably find it'll happen again!

Had the same problem with our son... stomach cramps etc since he was in nappies - he never did any sloppy joes, this was made worse as a toddler - had a spell in hospital when he had a virus, vomited everything he ate for 5 days, dehydrated.

Give them plenty of fresh citrus fruits and vegetables + fluids

NO BANANAS!
They'll go when they need to. tho it may be a while before they stop doing rabbit poohs
Good luck

It depends on the last time she went poop.My son when he was sick, few days ago 9month, he went whole day with nothing then the next he pooed like crazy but the pear jucie and pedialiyte is the best thing to use when trying to induce bowel movments as they are less traumatic on the child's system.

if she is constipated she will be in pain or distress . If she seems happy dont make a fuss but make sure she is taking plenty of fruit juice etc .

She may be holding on because you are making an issue out of it and sees it as a way of getting attention from you .or if she is coming from wearing nappies she may feel strange about pooping without one .
.
You need to beware of that also ...

she just might be constipated...
Try fresh orange juice diluted in a bit of water, pear juice, 4/5 dry apricots, or you can buy from Boots the Syrup of Figs (it's a gentle laxative) and can be taken from 1 year old.
If the symptomes persist, you'll have to go to your GP.
Good luck

Try giving her pear juice, if she is constipated, this should help loosen her up and cause a bowel movement. If she is an infant, dont give her bananas or rice, they are good for if your stomach is upset.

She could either by constipated and need more liquids and fiber in her diet or be trying to gain some control in her life by controllng her bowels. Toddlers and babies only control what goes in their bodies and what goes out, unless we give them more opportunities. Find out what your dd is capable of choosing and controlling, then let her be responsible for something.
