Toy Poodle they are cute and they do not shed. We brought ours to a house with two cats and they made fast friends. My dog practically leaps out of the car when we take her over there. She is small and loves animals close to her size up to about 45 pounds before she gets scared.

Small dogs have a tendency to be (as well as the reputation) a little on the hyperactive side. i.e.) the terrier group. Though I have seen many sedate Italian greyhounds... that's all that really come to mind at the moment.
I also agree with the comment about getting a puppy. Most dogs will learn to be accepting of whatever environment they are introduced into, especially as puppies. If the puppy learns to understand his role in the house (and it's relationship with the cat) there should really be no issues.
good luck!

Since you already have the cat, a puppy of any breed would work out fine. You and the cat will be able to teach it what it acceptable. I have an american pit bull terrier that totally respects our declawed, old cat - so much so that he won't even walk past her if she is lying in the hallway...he'll just wait at the end whimpering until she decides to move.

I have a cat and I have had it for about 8 years, last year we got a White West Highland Terrier and he tolerates the cat very well. We got him when he was a puppy. They get along well believe it or not.

I am so sorry for your loss! Chihuahuas can get along well with cats, if the cat is there first and since this is the case with your cat, I think they would be wonderful buddies. Chihuahuas are just the best dogs!

I would suggest a miniature or toy poodle, or even a poodle mix. They are very adaptable dogs. I also agree, that if at all possible, start out with a puppy... what ever you decide to get..

First off, my sympathies for the loss in your family. Pets are like any other family member im my humble opinion.
I'd reccommend a Retriever. They are generally quiet, family friendly (cats included) dogs. Downside is that they can be somewhat pricey.
