because most mothers-in-law find it difficult to accept the fact that their child has grown up and has his or her own life. he's no longer dependent on her, her child has found anew partner. it's natural for mothers to feel that way but this feeling eventually subsides especially when she realizes that her child is happy with the person he or she chose. you must be a good son-in-law. because if you weren't, no matter how nice your mother-in-law is, she'd hate you and will show you exactly how she feels about you.

because mine acts like the Queen and forgets that we pay the bills, not her. I think she is childish in a way, always gives us gifts but if we disagree on little things like TV show, she would be mad and started throwing wet tissues on the floor.
Now we live in our own house and not apartment anymore, so when she wants to come visiting (she lives in England) my husband said to wait. I would say NO if only she asked me!
She has a favorite son that keeps saying we do not care about him, so she would send all the gifts to him and have everyone go to his place to pick them up. Now we stopped doing that since peace and freedom worth more than any gifts MIL can give.
You are lucky with such great MIL!

I think someone else said - because we tend to hear more negative things than good things
I have always had a reasonably good relationship with my (now ex) m-i-l.
we still get along OK even though I parted ways with her son 5 years ago-
it is true that some Mothers-in-law still want to control their kids lives & interfere- certainly NOT ALL though
I hope that I dont come across that way to my kids partners

because most m-i-l see there boys as thier babies and no one is ever good enough for them ... there a select few that are great m-i-l but for the most part they are pretty bad.
