Hawaii lost control when their Kingdom was over thrown by the United States Govt. The US Govt posses majority of the ceeded lands and when the blood quantum of the Hawaiian blood line has dwindled down to 1/4 Hawaiian, these ceeded lands will then be in the possesion of the US Govt. And being as Hawaii is a State? There is NO WAY, shape or form any State can break away, unless they were just a Territory. That's just like telling the Alaskan Eskimos and the Native Indians to Take control and save their Lands. In which, majority of the States would be in the possesion of the Native Indians, let alone Mexico.
So, in light of your question, in regards to "development?" There is NO stopping development, unless the US GOVT, returns every single ounce of land to their rightful owner, then and only then, can development be stopped. There is no control over what the Govt has, because the Govt will out live ANY blood line. And that's my final answer....

Who ever Joni Mitchell is I can imagine that she is a hard core tree hugger to the bone.
Sure, there is development going on in Hawaii, but for the most part there still is A LOT of land that is natural, maybe not so much on the south side of Oahu (Honolulu, Pearl City, Aina Haina), but that is just one small section of all the Hawaiian Islands.
Yea, Oahu's south side is way overly developed, but it took several years to get that way. Besides that, Honolulu is the capital and that is where all the jobs are. Hawaii's total population is 1,211,537, and 868,751 people live on Oahu with most of them living on the south side, so of course the south side is going to be packed.
What I'm trying to say is that don't believe all the dooms day media, books, etc you read. When you go to the outer Islands, not Oahu, you will see with your own eyes that overwhelmingly, the Islands of HI are still natural.
Despite all the "negative" talk about development in Honolulu, we must be doing something right, after all Honolulu is ranked #1 in the "Quality of Life" in the United States for 2006 .

And in 2002, (that's the latest info I could find), HI was ranked #2 in the world in Environmental rankings.

I am not a Hawaiian, I am born and raised in Michigan on the mainland, but I have visited the island of Oahu, and there are Hawaiians living on it!!
Mr. Trump, and others are what spoil the beauty of it!!! Who knows, when the Trump hotel/condo hi-rise gets finished, Waikiki won't ever be the same...I think that all of Waikiki businesses will raise their pricing (heaven forbid), but I am just guessing on that, and I hope that it is not true!!!!!

I'm not sure where you live.. but those of us who live on the islands ARE trying to "save" the islands....it is very difficult to fight the developers with BIG pockets.. ie...Donald Trump.
Those of us that live on the No. Shore are in a tough fight right now with the developers that are trying to take over Kawela Bay......get informed and start writing to the State government IF you want to help...aloha

are there any americans living in the mainland out there?? it's a lot easier said than done. greedy people from your state comes here to make big money and make it harder for small businesses to survive. if you care so much then you need to stop it there from where it started and not here.
