Yes you can thank the Christian church for this bit of confusion.
the Catholic Church demoted him to one of the rulers of one of the 9 levels of Hell and dropped the ST. part from his name.. When they went the AS above so below idea and had to find rulers for these levels.they borrowed ideas from other religions for them.
ST. LUCIFER was one of the Arch Angles until God said he was going to give him the post of the Guardian Angel of this Planet. and it swelled his head . Until he lead a revolution in heaven thinking he could run creation better than his maker could.Lost and was thrown out of Heaven and fell through the heavens until he and those that followed him landed on an Island to await the day of Justice.
The Typical vision of the idea of any evil one was formed from the descriptions of so called evil beings from other religions.including from those that once fought with them such as the shield of the Knights Templar( a Goats head inside of a inverted pentagram.).
Just like SATAN he was made out to be a shape changer to be able to fool people.

The above folks are correct. Satan was the most beautiful of God's angels, but after the fall he will inexplicably become a gigantic, many-headed beast that, according to Dante's Inferno, will specialize in gnawing on the heads of the world's greatest traitors.
Notice how I said "will" up there, people? The thing about revelations is: IT HASN'T HAPPENED YET. According to the Old Testament, God and the Devil are still on speaking and-- gasp!-- meeting in person terms well into the bible; it isn't until nearly the end of the New Testment that the devil is defined and named specifically, and that hell becomes a horrible place as opposed to a vague location for non-believers. I'm not sure at what point in history Christians decided that half the last chapter of the bible takes place well before Genesis, but that's dogma for you.
Or illiteracy. Bible-banging priests in the 1800's weren't really all that bright.

Lucifer, as an angel in heaven, WAS incredibly beautiful. His sin was one of pride. He thought that all of the angels should worship him, and not God, since he was so beautiful and all, so God cast him and all that followed him, from heaven. These fallen angels were STILL sons of God too, since they were also created by God. When satan fell from grace, his beauty was stripped from him, he became the ugliest of the ugly instead of the most beautiful of the beautiful, and his name became Satan, meaning adversary.
Satan is a shape changer, as all of the angels are. They can take on many forms. One such form, was the serpant in Eden when Adam and Eve were created. This was after his fall from grace. His name means adversary, as in against the present order. So of course he called God a liar and said that Mankind would not die if the ate from the knowledge tree of good and evil.
It was an adverse thought. It was Satan, and not the beautiful Lucifer. The angels were created before man. Satan has been lying and tricking man ever since.

before Satan became rebellious and was cast out of heaven, he was the lead angel next to Jesus. he was the most beautiful of all the angels and was head of the heavenly choir. when he tempted Eve in the garden of Eden, he appeared as a serpent. back then, serpents were beautiful creatures with legs and wings (they became cursed soon after and we know them today as snakes) satan is still a beautiful being but the world has created a portrait of him with the horns, red leotards, and pitchfork. thats not him at all, but he delights when people think of him like that.
he was given that appearance by man to accommodate a person's expectations of a "devil" or "demon".

He [was] the most beautiful of the angels. Loved first before all others. Lucifer means "Son of the Morning Star."

Satan either IS or WILL BE a seven headed dragon.
"And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth . . . And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Revelation 12:3-9)

Lucifer was one of the, if not the, most beauiful of God's Angels. I've heard that he probably lead the Heavenly choir. His beauty is probably what lead to his prideful fall from grace. He was the angel of light.

Ezekiel 28:12-17 Son of man, weep for the King of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign Lord: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God. Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone - red carnelian, chrysolite, white moonstone, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald - all beautifully crafted for you and set in the finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I ordained and anointed you as the might angelic guardian. You had access to the holy mountain of God and walked among the stones of fire. You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you. Your great wealth filled you with violence, and you sinned. So I banished you from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian, from your place among the stones of fire. Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty. You corupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.
