I have had my license for about 2 years, but my parents started me after one year because they wanted my insurance to go down. Ok so here's what happened. I was at a stop sign trying to turn left on an 4 lane road. I look to my left and saw a car but it seemed far enough, but that was because I quickly glanced at it. I look to my right and the other lane was clear. I pull out and all of a sudden I see the car I spotted to my let earlier very close to me. I hear the brakes screech and I floor my car to get out of the way. I felt so terrible afterwards. This is the first major mistake I've made in driving. I haven't been able to cope with this well enough. I have taken the intersection several times before with no problem. I took it once again today and did it correctly, but it feels so much more difficult. I feel down now that I get behind the steering wheel. I don't know what I should do to get over this. Any advice is much appreciated.

Driving takes practice. Experience is the key.

Now you know to always look in the direction you are going to go in last. In this case, look right then look left before going left. As you approach mid-way, look right again.

What you may have experienced is an example of what happens when stupid drivers speed. That first time you saw the car way down the road, and only glanced quickly at it, you did not have time to gauge the speed. That car may have been doing 50 or 60 in a 35 mph zone or even faster. Distances close really fast at that speed. You should not feel terrible. I have experienced this same phenomenon myself and I know what to look for. It is it idiotic drivers who have no respect for speed limits and who will drive as fast as they are physically able that are responsible for all the problems. Blame them, not yourself.

By the way, I would bet that at least 75% of the people who answer this question and who are drivers fit into the idiotic speeding driver category.

Driving is challenging every day. Every day people make errors in judgment for distance, speed another car is going, the other driver not looking and trying to change lanes into your car. As you drive you will learn to look and judge the other driver's intent even if their tail lights are out. Just remember drive defensively and be a curtious driver and you will be fine.

Don't worry. The other car was probably going faster than you expected. It happens to everyone. Your ability to judge speed and distance will get better with practice. The more you drive, the better you will become. Just remember your rules of the road and look! You can't look around too much.

What you have is a touch of anxiety. The bad thing is that if you continue you will start to avoid the intersection and then little by little your anxiety will strip away your ability to drive. The best way to handle anxiety is to get cognitive behavior therapy. The way it works is the counselor will find out why you have developed the anxiety and give you ways to deal with it. this treatment is used for phobias. find a good counselor or therapist.

Same thing happened to me. I was at a traffic light. And i had a green light. And someone speed through the light. i saw him coming towards me, so i floored it, and i ended up into a pole. So it took me a couple of weeks to get over it. But my advice is to forget about it. And just tell yourself that now you've learned something new.

Practice, practice, practice... You know what can happen, so keep it in the back of your mind. If ever you're in doubt, don't pull out in front of a car. Wait till there is another chance to go. You'll be able to judge better the more practice you get.

you really shouldnt turn blindly, after you looked right you should have looked back left to see where the car was before you started to move, be aware of your surroundings and driving will be a lot more safe

Get back to driving right away. That is how you get over it. Just learn from your mistakes. Waiting doesn't make you a better driver.
