SPF means Sun Protection Factor and it is the degree to which a sun block, sunscreen or sun tan lotion, or a similar preparation protects the skin from UV rays. As far as choosing the right strength it depends on a few things. 1) the intensity of the suns' rays that day, sometimes the news will give a UV index for that day, 2) how long you'll be exposed to the sun and 3) the natural color of your skin tone. Example if you are very pale you will need initially a very strong SPF until you tan. I have seen them range up to 50SPF. On the other hand if you have an olive colored skin tone you won't need such a high SPF. Basically between these 2 color skin tone spectrum's figure out more or less where you fall under, along with the intensity of the suns rays for that day and the amount of time you stay in it. You have to use some common sense and adjust yourself accordingly.

Note: certain meds can cause photosensitivies as well which means that your skin becomes particulary sensitive to the exposed sun light and you can burn easier than normal.

it is the amount of sun rays that can be blocked out. the higher the spf the better, usually maximum of 30. i usually buy the highest spf but cheapest, brands dont matter but if you have sensitive skin try a skin patch test
