then he probably doesn't have ADD/ADHD, but just is more active or some other disorder. Try sticking to a ery regimented routine at home and school, have his teachers move his seat if needed, to avoid distraction. and find a very good child psychiatrist, one who will take the time to figure out the problem without wipping out the prescription pad.

first monitor his diet, no sugar since this adds to the excitement. Choose calming activities at home. If you see that something, ex. playing with cars excites him move on to another activity maybe coloring. It so important to be consistent, don't allow behavior one day and yell the next. Work with him to control it. Try some sort of reward program. Also I can not express this enough to the parents I work with everyday. Structure, Structure, Structure, Routine, Routine, Routine. Get a routine and follow it. Its important that he realizes whats going to happen everyday. Now it doesn't have to be exact, but have a similar schedule. With ADHD you have to have some sort of structure. Plan certain activities for you to do together. If you have those days that he's bouncing off the walls, then have him take a breather, sit him down and wait for the excitement to end. I work with a for year old in school who has ADHD and I always have to have my hand somewhere on him for him to sit still. If things get out of control we go for a walk, or read something he's into. I've been doing this for 6 years now and I do believe that medicine is not always the best choice. Good luck and be strong

Do your own research for alternative methods. Try reading the book, The ADD Answer by Dr. Frank Lawliss. Excellent resource. You can try different diets, like high protein and low sugar. You can try music therapy like having him beat a drum to a steady beat in the mornings. Give him plenty of opportunity for excercise. Gymnastics are wonderful. Let him chew sugarless gum when he needs to focus. Find the approaches that work best for him. Good Luck!

We eliminated all high fructose corn syrup, msg,& hydrogenated oils from our son's diet. We also went to organic dairy, produce & Kosher meat. You'll be amazed at the results. We also eliminated all artificial ingredients. Dietery changes should always be a tried before you put any chemical into a childs body.

I don't really know the direct answer to your question however i was researching autism and read that alot of kids that are diagnosed ADHD sometimes are misdiagnosed and actually have a form of autism that is not severe, so i would make sure that he indeed does have ADHD.

DIET is everything. Try NO caffine LOW sugar and NO additives or MSG. Keep your child on this diet for 2 weeks and you will see BIG improvements.
There are also some herbs that are very calming check Wild Oats, Whole Foods or natural foods store. You just put a few drops in their drinks and it allows them to stay on task and focus.

Talk to his pediatrician about it. I'm sure there are all sorts of alternatives out there for ADHD/ADD. You'll just have to do a bit of research or talk to someone who knows alot about ADD/ADHD.

"do you know me" offers good advice. Check him out for allergies if cutting out the junk foods don't help.
I have seen kids diagnosed with ADD because they needed glasses and could not see the teachers blackboard, with the result that they were sitting in class totally bored.

My son was diagnosed with that,, and it wasn't ADHD/ADD,, it was he couldn't get written information from his head to the paper,, So he acted out,, and they sent him to the principals office,, and they let him color all day long,, are you getting my drift? Get to the root of the child's lack of attention,, don't listen to those snobby teachers who want little soldiers for students!!!!!!!!

Monitor and eliminate things in their diet that cause hyper activity. Such as red food coloring is a big one, preservatives, salt, etc. You can google it to find out more. Eliminating the red food dye alone did it for my daughter.
