On a recent NPR radio show, I heard that most birds migrate at night. Perhaps the birds have selected your tree as an official Heron Rest Stop (HRS) and in the spring they'll come back as they migrate north again?

It must be an amazing site to see so many huge birds all in the same tree? What part of the country do you live in? Call the local university and ask to speak with the biology department. They may have bird specialists there who can be more specific.
