Telling someone you no longer want to be involved with him/her is always difficult. To ensure it is mature and with as less drama as possible, I would have the conversation in neutral territory. You don't want to make a favorite "outing" or location something that either will regret in the future.
I had to break up with a guy and I knew he was going to be erratic but I did not have the guts to tell him that I thought he was an arrogant infidel who was consistently rude to people he thought were beneath him (i.e., restaurant crew, etc.). His attitude really was disgusting, but I had to let him know that it just wasn't going to work for us.
So try not to point finger about things that went wrong (especially if you never told him before; not giving him time to correct some of these mistakes would be unfair). If you tell him that the relationship just wasn't working for you, it is generic. He may ask for specifics but you should try to let him know that you had certain expectations of growth and it wasn't happening. Of course, if he was a total jerk and you can "safely" let him know this, by all means, do so. Hopefully he'll treat the next woman better; will have learned from his mistakes.
