There are a lot of people in competition for it. With parents probably having student loans themselves, it made it harder for them to save for their child's education. Also, more high school students are attending high school and now even adults are returning to school for retraining.

Scholarships and academic awards have to do with how well you did in high school. Financial aid and need-based money has to do with how much your parents make. If you have like a 4.0GPA you still could get 0 scholarships but get thousands in financial aid if for example you only have one parent who makes like 10,000 or less per year. It all depends on the situation...also private schools will pretty much cut their tuition in half or sometimes even 2/3 or 3/4 if you have a 3.5 or better

Need based aid is only difficult if you or your parents have/make a lot of money. Scholarship money is hard if you are applying to colleges that place you in the bottom half of the class. If you apply schools where you are near the top, the money will flow easier. And you qualify for an honors program that gets you the gravy of the school's teachers and research opportunities...

You are looking under the wrong rocks...

1. because people don't do their homework and find the scholarships, and there are many, that aren't awarded. 2. their parents make too much money to qualify, 3. people just don't apply, 4. not every one gets financial aid and that's life. Go to the school financial aid office and ask for their help. good luck

because, if you and both your parents work, it almost always puts you over the income limit for need-based aid. It seems most of the need-based aid can only be received by people who do not work, or students who can declare themselves independent. Often, merit-based aid will require students to keep a GPA as high as 3.5, which is hard to do for some students.
