taking the lords name in vain, it seems like a lot of the younger generation uses this phrase as a every other sentence type of thing for no apparent reason, and i was just wanting to know what the general population thinks about it.

I think it is taking the Lord's name in vain. I cringe whenever I hear it... I prefer Oh my goodness or gosh.

Taking the name in vain means by false manners. Such as taking an oath and swearing upon God's name and then not living up to that oath or lying still.

I think it depends how you use it. Casually and too often, about nothing, yes...you shouldn't (in my opinion)....when I heard something terrible that happened to someone, I said oh my God....and I meant it, like oh, God, help.

Different meanings, I think. One is sort of a tossed off expression, the other is like calling on Him.

It certainly is. I'm getting better about not saying it - I think I've ALMOST stopped, except when my two year old got her fingers stuck in the door-jam, and I was extremely distraught.

When used vainly it is wrong but it can be used correctly and reverently as the Psalmist does.
