I doubt he would phrase it that way, but yes God does guide him in a special way as chief shepherd of the universal Church.

If we want to listen, God talks to each of us, through:
+ His Word, the Bible
+ His Church, the Body of Christ, the community of believers.
+ Ordained Church leaders like the Pope
+ The Holy Spirit which inspires us
+ Our conscience
