Depends on your definition of hero. I've been to Iraq and am currently in Afghanistan but I wouldn't consider myself a hero. Go look up the Medal of Honor recieptients cititations or google Audie Murphy. Then you decide what you call a hero.

Only when you are fighting for a legit cause.
What is going on in Iraq right now? No. It certainly is not a legit one. Those troops over there are just innocent men and women who were unfortunately dragged into a self-interest driven lost cause. They are not defending anything, only creating more hate which in turn creates more terrorism. It's like the punch theory. If someone punches you in the face, you're not going to stand there and take it, correct? You'll hit back harder. But then you'll end up with a full-blown fight which was not the route you wanted to take.
Anyways, going back to the hero thing. I would call Iraqi soldiers heroes because they are in fact, fighting for a cause. What better one than fighting to keep invaders from taking over and stealing from their country?

In general,No. When a soldier fights he is first fighting for his unit, his buddies. Second he is fighting to kill or destroy the "enemy" of the countries present leaders. When a soldier does a heroic deed in combat at the risk of his life to save others, then he is a hero. Other wise he is just trying to survive the situation. The word hero can say a lot about someone if it is used in the correct sense. Some politicians falsely use the word to and make their cause seem more meaningful.

Yes they are HEROS!
When they enlist, they know they are not enlisting to sit behind a desk Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. They know the posibilities of going to war. They are heroes because they stand up and do it, while cowards stay behind and question what they do. Obviously, they are protection our freedom and safety, not just anyone has the courage and willingness to sacrifice their lives like our military men and women do. A military member does not necessarily have to get killed in combat to be a hero, that is called the ultimate sacrifice. Whether or not you come back home, you are still a hero.

Not always. After all, weren't Nazi troops fighting for Germany? (I wouldn't call them heroes).

Yes. I have the greatest respect for anyone who is over there now or ever has been over there (or in any war where they chose rather than being drafted).
