I dont think TIN number can help you build credit history.

Atleast when you fill out credit card application, they will require you to enter your social security number in order to use it to check your credit history with a national credit bureau. Most of the credit card applications i saw online dont have an option for user to enter TIN number. So that's why i dont think TIN number can help you build credit history.

Basically, the main purpose of TIN number is for people without a social secuiry number to use this number to pay tax.

Anyway, this is a statement i found online:
"*Remember: ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not authorize work and cannot be used as an identification number or for any purpose outside the tax system."

I couldn't find a source, but I would expect the credit bureaus to treat a TIN the same as a SSN. As long as it is a 9 digit number that is unique to you.

Why don't you have a SSN? Do you have a green card or are you illegal. Credit has nothing to do w/ citizenship!
