Wow..Have you considered a tent? There are campgrounds on most of the islands. I think the best thing to do would be ask a local when you get there. If you do decide to stay in your car, see if there's a Walmart, I know they allow people to camp in their parking lots. What are you going to do for a bathroom and shower though?

Well if you don't want to camp? Then park your car by the camping grounds. At least you're able to take showers and use the bathrooms. Look up camping areas in Hawaii on line, maybe it will give you a good idea as to what area you will be in and where the camp grounds are in the area you will be visiting.
You can also park by or at the nearest Police Station, at least you know there will always be Police patroling that area. Don't forget to sleep on the passenger side or in the back of the car. Putting the seat down to sleep from the Driver's side is only so OBVIOUS....lol. Good luck in your quest...

Valsteam is right. If I were in your shoes, I would first find a good spot (private properties) and ask the landowner if you can pitch a tent for the night. Pack up your tent and gear and go on to another location in the morning. The people there are weary of lawsuits and any claims due to you being there on their property but I hope there are some good people who will let you stay, rather than sleep in a car!
You can find a company that rents camping equipment in Honolulu. Hmmmm...

yeah, i wouldn't reccomend it. it's like everywhere else though. certain parts of where ever you are are dangerous, but there are a few places where it's a lot safer. it's a risk though no matter how safe the area. if you do decide on staying in your car, don't sleep in the same spot every night, look for different spots so people won't try to make plans on mugging you. remember, there are a lot of big polynesians out here and ice is a big problem. hope you decide to get a small place instead and enjoy your stay here, aloha.

There are cameras everywhere because of the expensive stores. I believe that you would be safe, depending on where you parked.
