A volvox is a colony with specialied cells doing different jobs for the betterment of the community. A chlamydomonas is just a single celled organism

Since Volvox is a colony, it doesn't need to keep that much genetical information in use, and each cell is specialized in only one function.
Chlamydomonas, as a free single living organism, has a lot of variation and does all its functions alone. It can mutate easier than Volvox.
