The most common cause of death due to theobromine toxicity (from eating chocolate) is people not calling us soon enough to do something about it in time. That means BEFORE it is absorbed into the bloodstream. If you wait until your dog starts showing symptoms, it is often too late.
If this only happened 45 minutes ago, there is time to intervene and save your dog's life....IF you call your DVM (or an animal emergency clinic if your regular DVM is not available) RIGHT NOW.
This can be fatal if not treated quickly. Chocolate is indeed poisonous to dogs...that is not a 'belief'....it's a medical FACT. It is not an 'allergy'....it's a TOXICITY. Theobromine (a substance in chocolate) is flat-out toxic to a dog's system. The caffeine in there doesn't help matters, either. The smaller the dog and the darker the chocolate (there is no chocolate in 'white' chocolate, btw).....the higher the fatality rate.
Please don't delay....and please don't put your dog's life into the hands of total strangers on a Yahoo message board who have no verifiable medical training or education, and might just want to 'see' your dog die. :-/

The worst that will probably happen is that he will get a very upset tummy although chocolate can be toxic to dogs, some believe this and some do not, I know many people who are none the wiser that feed their dogs chocolate on a regular basis.. I don't think he had enough to do any serious damage, some are allergic to chocolate but he would have a reaction by now.
Keep a close eye on him, he may vomit (a good thing)
Watch he does not get lethargic, if he does take him to the vet.
If his stomach is growling a lot, he may throw up, like I said a good thing..:-) Not for poor you though who has to clean it up..sure he will feel sorry for himself poor boy...but dogs do not learn from such experiences, hide the chocolate in future, hope he is ok.

Call your vet and have the chocolate wrapper handy. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are more toxic to dogs and they'll want to know exactly what was eaten.
They can probably tell you on the phone if you need to worry/induce vomiting. Plus, they'll know if Poms are more susceptible to chocolate.
Here's a link that will help:

It's standard knowledge that choclolate can be lethal to canines, especially the smaller breeds. I would think that it would depend on body weight and amount eaten as to effects it would have on your dog. Since your pooch is a small dog, I would call your vet / emergency vet and take him in for an examination. Don't wait for your little friend to get sick before getting the proper veterinarian care.
Cheers and Good Luck

I found this on talktothevet.com:
We've all heard it, "Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him". We'll how true is it you're probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M's?
The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.
Toxic Levels
The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.
On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.
Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

Ooh, he ate half the bar? Well, my dog ate half a bar once, and she got a little grumbly, but she was okay. But, she was a big dog, so maybe take your dog, if he starts, like barfing, and coughing things up, to the vet.
I hope he gets better! :)

Choclate can be poisonous to some dogs, but not all. If its been 30 mins and he has not barfed it up, and seem normal-he may be okay.
