I went to college in NYC and had many friends from Philly. If you have plenty of time, but not a lot of money, you can take SEPTA trains out of Philly as far as Trenton, NJ where you can hook up with NJ Transit, which will take you into Penn Station in NYC. It takes almost all day and the trains stop. at. every. single. little. tiny. station. between. Philadelphia. and. New. York. But it's a lot chear than Amtrak.
