Right now I have about 1-2 inches of hair on top that I gel for the messy look. The sides and back are short.
I was thinking of going with this short cut (example)

well i like guys with hair no top messy and sides cut that's like if ur in the army unless u r? I would say let it grow and trim it but dont chop it all off give urself a Jensen Ackles look that's the guy from Supernatural --good luck :)

The shorter hair is in, with a little bit of a bang going on, on top.
Sort of like brad Pitt. Comb the top forward toward your forehead with some gel, could be hot !!

I think the haircut you have now sounds pretty cute. If you think you'll look good with the other cut, then go for it! Without knowing what you look like or anything, I can't tell what you would look better in.
