It sounds to me that she overlapped the line of demarcation. When this happens the strength of the hair is broken down, and will cause breakage. Your cuticle is blown wide open, and you need to treat it to smooth it back out.
I would recommend a good shampoo and conditioner. You should once a week leave your conditioner in and wrap your hair in a towel. Leave this on overnight, and rinse thoroughly in the morn. Warning, if you have fine hair this will make your hair really limp until the next shampoo. But, with the right product your hair will become stronger. You can also go and have a clear cellophane applied to your hair. This will bring strength and gloss.

How many times do you color your hair?
If you used a cheap brand or bleached it, the chemicals could have damaged your hair! I suggest you buy a good thickening/strengthening shampoo, or perhaps a clarifying.
Using flat irons, lots of product could be a factor against the dye as well!
I also recommend not dying your hair till it builds up again.
(Also, try leaving it down)

brushing your hair too much, stress, excessive colour on weak hair, can all cause hair loss. is it thin patches? if so, not that much to worry about. eat plenty of protein and you'll be fine. also apply protein packs to your hair, and try to use heat protecting spray whenever you use a hairdrier or a pair of straighteners. they're evil.
