Okay, obviously it wasn't Satan as I'm told that's Hebrew (or a romanisation of the hebrew word) for enemy. It's not Lucifer either as that's Latin for Light-bringer and didn't get associated with Satan 'til the middle ages.
Can anyone help here?

Judas? That was Jesus's disciple who betrayed him. Satan's old testiment, dear.

Ashley P: adversary and enemy or almost synonymous. In other words: I already said that.

Lucifer is not Satan. Lucifer was cherubhim, Satan was seraphim. They were two seperate entities.

jewel_flower: please keep you opinion to yourself. Lucifer is a Latin word - ie: it is not the original name for him. The Old Testiment was written primarily in Hewbrew (or did you think that KJV was the first edition?)

Ashley P: Thanks for your updates. The source though (http://www.bibletopics.com/BibleStudy/164.htm) shows that Satan was not an entity in the original version, and the translation transformed the generalised term "an adversary" (not the devil, just a generic adversary) into a personification of it and named it Satan after the Hebrew word for adversary.

Sorry, I take that back :( I just found this myself ~ "In modern Jewish theology, Helel in Isaiah 14 is not equated with the Jewish concept of HaSatan (the adversary)."
Helel was a Babylonian "false god" who was the son of another god called Shahar. I guess that chlks the whole association to Lucifer a translation error :/
So.. anything else anyone?

Sorry Don H - Satan in Hebrew (something like aShatahn) means adversary in a negative sense, not simply a challenger.

As stated by Kim C it was Lucifer - like it or not. Your assertions to the contrary don't change fact.
Within the prophecy against Babylon, God addressed the power behind the throne, and explained why he had fallen.
Sorry - I would have written it in Hebrew, but YA doesn't supply the necessary fonts.
Lucifer is as much a name as is Satan. Lucifer, Lightbearer, Son of the Morning, Morning Star - and Satan, Adversary, Accuser of the Bretheren.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.
Love and blessings

His name/title was Ha-Shatan, which means "the accuser", and is really a title for the angel who tested human's faith rather than a proper name.
The name "day-star" in Hebrew is Helel, and etymologically is one of the earliest known names.

The Scriptures indicate that the creature known as Satan did not always have that name. Rather, this descriptive name was given to him because of his taking a course of opposition and resistance to God. The name he had before this is not given. God is the only Creator, and 'his activity is perfect,' with no injustice or unrighteousness. (De 32:4)
