had the exact same problem with my rotwieler. What I did was I went to a hardware store to buy electrical fences for gardens but ones with low voltages for small animals like dogs. I put it up around the garden and whenever he would try to go and destroy it he would get a lil shock from the fence trying to go in. Eventually from being shocked he stopped even going near the garden. When that happened I took the fence down and even now he stil doesnt bother with it. Don't go buying the ones with voltages for a horse because then he can get hurt. The low volatge doesn't hurt just sends a signal.

If the dog ever chews on something indoors that you want him to stay away from, use a bitter apple spray, it's avaliable at pet shops and vet's offices. For out doors, ground black pepper sprinkled on the plan and a generous amount on the earth around it and he should stay away. He'll likely have a nasty sneezing fit but the pepper doesnt harm either the plants or the animal, just annoy him.

It sounds to me like you need to consider putting your plants in higher spaces. As dog eat grass and green leaf items for health purposes. If you put them up higher and work with the dog he will in most cases respect your plants. I have a lot of plants and I have 4 dogs, so all my plants are placed in higher areas. It would not be fair to the dog to lock him up for something that is so natural for him. Also, talk to the pet store owner sometimes they have harmless products that will keep your pets away from some things. Finally educate yourself on dogs habits and training. I am sure you won't regret it.

You could put a LITTLE cayanne pepper on the dirt...dogs hate it. Or you could spray around them with Bitter Apple (the spray to stop them from chewing furniture. Or you could fence in the garden instead of fencing in them! :-)

i have used the chili powder method before and it works but with our bird dogs you can't mess with the nose so i just trained them to stay out of MY gardens and planted them a small area of edibles for grazing. they enjoy wheat grass etc. they eat it ,lay in it ,roll around, wrestle whatever....it's their area

GO TO YOUR VET AND GET A LIST OF TOXIC PLANTS, AND MAKE SURE YOU GET RID OF THEM. THEN PUT THE REMAINING PLANTS IN HANGERS HIGH ENOUGH SO THEY CAN'T BE GOT.
