Wooden blocks, rescue heroes, cars that are safe for his age, legos. These are all toys he can use now and years from now. I have 8 year old rescue heroes that are still in use!
No matter what you get for toys, make sure you send him a couple of these books if he doesn't have them:
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive The Bus
No, David
The Monster at the End of this Book, starring Grover
Click, Clack, Moo, (cows that type.)
I promise you he will love the books and still be reading them in a few years....if he doesn't have them, his parents will think you are a genius for finding them and they'll like them too. They are hilarious!
My ten year old even reads these books to his younger brothers.
Hope this helps

RE:
What is a good birthday present for a 2 year old boy?
My nephew is turning 2 in a couple of weeks and we don't really kn ow what to get him. He is getting a tricycle from his grandparents, that is the only present we know off so far. We want to spend about $50. We have asked the parents, but not gotten any concrete answers.

Thomas The Tank!! I am a nanny/babysitter for several families, and one of the children is now two, going on three, and the "in thing" for 2 and 3 year olds this year is Thomas The Tank.
I went to Toys R Us, and bought him (his birthday is next week) a train conductor's outfit, and a Thomas The Tank carry case (that holds the Thomas The Tank train sets, which his parents just bought him) wrapping paper and a few Thomas The Tank stickers, and it cost me less than 35 dollars.
Now he can BE the conductor, as well as carry his toys around with him, and it will something he can use over, and over and over.

My son is 2 1/2 and he loves stuff like trucks and cars. They're are also a lot of learning toys you can get him, just look in the toy section at walmart. DVD's are always a good gift too, stuff like Barney, Blue's Clues, and stuff like that. Hope this helps.

The Rescue Heroes line of action figures are great for boys that age. Little People sets are good, also. LeapFrog learning toys are awesome.
If you can, take the tyke to the toy section at a store, and see what he seems fascinated by and plays with for a while.

Open a savings account in his name, with his mom listed as POD. Each year you can give him cash for his savings. Kids get so many presents these days that hold their interest for mere days. When he turns 21, this savings account will be worth many times more than a series of junk toys he won't even remember!

Do you not know your children? You of all people should know what they like. Not getting them the same thing isn't good because if one is playing the other will more then likely want to play too, so there's going to be fighting with that. But honestly, you know what they like. Do they like trains? Do they like cars? Do they like a certain movie? You're with these kids twenty-four seven, walk down a toy isle and see what they like and don't like.

ok... so i have a little brother that's 2... he luvs to draw.... if ur going with art supplies... i saw a kit a kohls very recently and it contains markers, a drawing pad, and some other stuff, the good thing about it is that the markers only draw on the pad, no matter how hard he tries, it will never draw on anything... :D another good idea is building blocks or something to that affect. my lil bro luvs this hammer set we got him for his birthday.... it's a little desk with plastic "nails" and stuff, it looks like fun for boys that age... hope this helps a little :)
