I'm a bartender at a casino, i make my sex on the beach with chambord, midori, peach schnapps, cran, orange, splash of pineapple and grenadine.... everyone has loved this, but they say it's not like their usual SOTB... any ideas? Can we just have a STANDARD on drink recipes?

we do have a 'standard' SOTB drink recipe... and yours IS NOT it! LOL. Yours reminds me of something like a cross between a 'breeze' recipe, a melon ball recipe, and the SOTB recipe without the Vodka and with a dash of grenadine thrown in for the fun of it... nothing wrong with doing it like this mind you! However your gang can't really blame the tourists if they order a drink and your establishment serves them some 'off recipe' concotion. Perhaps you guys should call this one a Melon Breeze...or Sex on a Breezy Beach? Or a [Casino Name here, e.g Ceaser's] SOTB

Now in reality it is more closely resembled to a Jesey SOTB or a SOTB #2, heck it even resembles a virgin sex on the beach!

See link below for a page link for SOTB recipes! You will need to use the site's search function and type in: sex on the beach (or any drink!)

Mindy has the recipe that is MOST commonly referred to as SOTB...a/k/a A Hairy Navel with Cran... yours, while sounding interesting, is not what I would expect if I ordered one.

This is part of the problem with tending bar and making happy patrons... people 'grow up' expecting a drink to be made a certain way. Then when they go elsewhere and order a drink they complain that it's not 'made right'. Often times it is either because their 'regular bar' decides to make a creative drink but then falters when it comes time to name it. Other times it's because a certain geographic location just has come to make a certain drink a certain way and the people in that area expect it to be THAT drink.

Who's right? Who's wrong?

When a customer is disastified with something I make them I try to figure out why. Often times I get the 'it doesnt taste like the drink I get from XYZ' I usually shrug it off (content in knowing I followed the 'standard' recipe) and try to ascertain what I need to mix up to get 'their' drink.
This is harder than it sounds. A lot of bartenders simply follow recipes like a cook does without having the skills to be able to readily know what two or more liquors will taste like when combined. Hence the difference between a bartender and a mixologist is the same as the difference between a cook and a chef.

Sometimes trying to recreate their drink works and sometimes (often due to the inability to express what the underlying difference in the essence of the drinks taste is) it doesn't but they always appreciate the effort regardless...

and sometimes they end up getting a drink that they didn't expect but find that they really enjoy!

This off recipe drink (or the one made in the attempt to recreate it) then becomes:

'THAT drink that we had in...."

BTW.. I suggest that after creating a 'new' drink that is successful that you immediatley WRITE down what you did and the amounts thereof. The times that I've created a drink on the fly for someone only to 'not write it down due to being busy and then 'lose it' by the end of a busy night for one reason of another is truly a sad experience to remember (I made a drink for a bachelorette party that tasted JUST LIKE wedding cake! I got busy, said I'd write it down later, got busier.. recipe gone!)

The original recipe for SOTB is:

1 shot vodka
1 shot chambord
Fill with sweet & sour

Through the years, people who didnt know the real recipe just started winging it. It became such that people would just throw a couple of liquors and some fruit juices together and call it a SOTB. Now you've got 20-30 recipes for the same drink.

Try the original. Neither you or your customers will be disappointed.

Well yeah, when people order something they expect it to a standard regular format. . .But you could certainly advertise like a special SOTB, like call it something else clever or something, and people would probably like it, but would at least know what they are getting into. After all, someone who hates midori for example, might order a SOTB because that's not a usual ingredient, so by you changing it without notice it might make them really not enjoy the drink.

grapefruit juice

Add vodka and peach schnapps to a highball glass. Fill with equal measures of cranberry juice and grapefruit juice, and stir.
