I went to my atterny's office to sign some documents. Her secretary offered me coffee. Should I have said: "No thank you"? Or is it ok to accept?

If they offer, it's okay to accept.

It is definitely ok to accept. If the secretary or anyone in the office were to take offense to someone who said yes to a cup of coffee, then they probably wouldn't offer in the first place. I think it is pretty common place for offices to offer guests/customers a beverage.

Absolutely accept, and anything else they offer you. After all you are paying for it in the long run. I work for a major international law firm, we have professional coffee makers (baristers not Barrister) they serve the full range of what you would get in any cafe! Look at it this way, you are paying $500 per hour to speak with a professional, a cup of coffee is nothing to them, but for you it is an expensive coffee!

It is fine to accept the coffee if you would like it, but if you do not want the coffee you can always tell her that you have already had something to drink, that way her feelings aren't hurt and you will not have to worry about finishing the cup of coffee before you leave. This way you are still courtious and polite with out being fake or appearing mean. :)

Dude ... if someone offers you coffee, you may as well treat it as a genuine but non-obligatory offer. If it had been a more significant offer of a favour (eg a full meal), then weighing up your answer may have been worthwhile, but I don't think it's worth assigning too much head-space to this one.

It is OK to accept the coffee, but it is rude to put your nose into the cup while sipping it!

It's a courtesy that some offer, typically if you'll be waiting or there for a while. One of life's occasional freebies. Enjoy!

If you want it, take it. Its free and it makes the person that offered it to you feel good. It makes them feel like they did something nice. Its a Karma thing.

why do you think yes or no is right or wrong in the first place? if you dont want something you said no thank you. you were polite. if you said yes thank you, you were still polite. it doesnt matter to that secretary or your attorney if you are thirsty or not
