At 10, there's no need to be doing any bag work IMO [0] - focus on speed and skill for now - use target mits [1] and make him work around you.

There are singificant musculo-skeletal differences between children and adults [2] so the problems you could cause to his developing frame are many: choose an over-heavy bag and you risk damaging shoulders, elbows, wrists, knuckles, tibia, fibia, ulna, radius, *etc*... too light it'll bounce around and be worse than useless because it will encourage uncontrolled technique.

Power is pointless without control, so get that right first. Get target mits and develop his speed, aim and footwork - it'll make him a better fighter in the long run.

Hello, Ma'am, this is a good idea for your boy(s). They will love it, use it, and become more responsible men someday, because of what you propose now! I know, I bought my twin sons a bag at age 14, they are now 27, and tough yet gentle souls.

First-- ignore all the E-Bay offers. You don't want a used boxing bag.
Second-- look online for reputable Sporting Goods Stores, maybe google "punching/boxing bags", or visit some local Sporting goods store, which has a good selection of equipment, not just golf gloves and sneakers, LOL.

Consider a water filled bag. This way, you can adjust the volumn, the resistance, as well as increase same, as Junior becomes stronger.

What a Mom! Good Luck!

Mary ~
Go to Ringside.com and they will have what you're looking for. In my opinion, go with a small free standing bag. 10 year old boys will indeed be 10 year boys what's their fascination today will be in the back of their heads tomorrow.
You can never tell what might happen they might get hooked, I had close to 30 fights by the time I was ten.
Good luck to you and your boys and I hope you find what you're looking for.

walmart has some punching bags that are free standing with a weighted base (with sand or water) that are not the real thing, but sufficient for that age until a boxing interest matures and they need a real punching bag. I hope this helps and good luck
