First off lets talk about the enclosures. Generally a sealed box will give you better sound quality and a tighter bass response, while a ported will give you better SPL and a boomier sound.

Now for the subs, 2-10s will generally have a tighter response, great SQ, but not as much SPL (normally).

2-12s will have a good response, good SQ, and good SPL (normally)

A 15 will have a slower response, decent SQ, and good SPL (normally)

Depending on what you listen to, would determine which setup to go with. Personally if you listen to a variety of music then go with a sealed enclosure, but if all you listen to is Hip Hop then go with a ported enclosure. Then, determine how much bass you want, if you want some bass then go with the 2-10s, but if you'd like to have that little extra kick, then go with 2-12's. Personally I'd stay away from the 15 inch sub, I've never liked the way they sound, I believe good 10s or 12s will always sound better.

And for a last note, don't go cheap. Buy a nice setup, it'll be worth it as far as sound quality, spl, reliability, and longevity. Recommended sub/amp companies: JL Audio, MTX, Kicker, Eclipse, Fosgate, Memphis, Audiobahn, Hifonics, the list goes on. And don't settle for their entry level stuff, if you can afford it, try to upgrade at least to the mid level.

Hope this helps.

If your looking for a Sub that has good sound quality for music and can still produce good low bass as well look into an Alpine Type-X either 2-10" or 1-12". If you can put it in a 3cubic foot ported enclosure tuned to about 38hz. With this sub I think you will be very satisfied with what you are trying to achieve. For an amp selection stay away from off brands and amps that rate in MAX power ratings, go by RMS ratings. Stay away from brands like Sony, Pyle, Lanzar, and alot of other ones, the list would be too long. Basically a good rule to go by is you get what you pay for.

i would easilly recommend 2 12" subs. and definately ported. as far as what some people have said thus far, JL Audio does not make awesome woofers. the only JL sub i would by is from the w7 series, which is way overpriced imo. and unless you do it right with an immortal\eternal series woofer, audiobahn is far from top of the line. (bty immortal\eternal is overpriced imo too). although ive never heard an alpine type-x myself, i know for a fact that its an overpriced woofer. easily, the best bang for your buck would to go with 2 12" alpine type-r subwoofers in a custom made ported enclosure. no prefab pos here. given a strong amplifier and a well designed box, ive seen 2 12" type-r woofers go over 150db MECA style. for 2 12" subs, go with a 7 ft^3 box (after all displacement) and depending on what you use it for, tune somewhere in the lower 30hz range for daily music, or higher for spl standards (if you want to just play one tone and make that tone loud). then again if you want the setup for pure spl, then a really really small box and a lot lot lot of port area tuned way high like upper 40hz or so

lol @ drifter, sealed boxes are never the way to go to get any type of spl measure at all. sealed boxes are quieter and dont play as low as ported box, but do play tighter. lol, in an open trunk car, like a hatchback or an suv, a crx enclosure is normally best. that is, subs pointed up, and ports pointed toward the back of the vehicle.

2-10's would be good and are smaller and take up less space than 2-12's if you don't want it to shake the whole block get the tens and get a sealed box.

2-3 10inch subs is the best its nice and tight sound and the best sub is a JL AUDIO 10W7... if you have a van suv hatchback a sealed box is the best cause a seal box reflects the sound the best. but if you have a sedan a bandpass box is the best cause the box reflex the sound for you and and your truck lid wont shake and youll get sold bass
